The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is taking proactive steps to advance youth engagement and social welfare services. The ministry’s efforts span beyond youth programs to include comprehensive social welfare services such as rehabilitation, adoption, and corrections, all aimed at supporting vulnerable individuals and providing homes for abandoned children.

In a significant move to strengthen these services, Commissioner Seun Ogunlende led a delegation to the Social Welfare Agency in Madrid, Spain, in collaboration with LIFE FOUNDATION. This visit is part of the ministry’s initiative to revitalize existing partnerships and enhance the social welfare system to align with international standards.

The delegation included Director of Social Welfare Mrs. Jaiyeola, Deputy Director of Adoption and Fostering Adetutu Ipaye, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Gbenga-Olusanya Miriam, and Assistant Social Welfare Officer Adebiyi Ganiat. The team is confident that their engagement in Madrid will foster international collaboration and open new opportunities in social welfare.

During the visit, the delegation met with key officials at the Social Welfare Agency to discuss strategies and best practices for improving social welfare services. The discussions focused on rehabilitation for vulnerable individuals, streamlining adoption processes, and enhancing correctional programs. The goal is to adopt innovative approaches that have been successful in Spain and implement them in Lagos to improve the lives of those they serve.

The partnership with LIFE FOUNDATION has been crucial in facilitating this visit. The foundation’s expertise and international network have provided essential support for upgrading the social welfare systems in Lagos. Their commitment to social causes aligns perfectly with the ministry’s goals, making this collaboration a significant step forward.

Additionally, the visit explored opportunities for training and capacity-building for Lagos’ social welfare officers. By learning from their Spanish counterparts, these officers can enhance their skills and knowledge, leading to better service delivery. The exchange of ideas and experiences is expected to result in a more robust and effective social welfare system.

This visit to Madrid signifies Lagos State’s commitment to continuous improvement and international cooperation. By embracing global standards and practices, the ministry aims to create a more supportive and nurturing environment for abandoned children and vulnerable individuals. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the journey towards excellence in social welfare services.

The ministry looks forward to the positive impact this collaboration will bring and the strengthened ties between Lagos State and the Social Welfare Agency in Madrid.

Former Konga CEO Nick Imudia Commits Suicide

In a tragic turn of events, Nick Imudia, the former Chief Executive Officer of Konga, one of Nigeria’s leading e-commerce companies, has died by suicide. Imudia, who was serving as the CEO of D.light, a pioneering company in residential solar energy solutions and household products, took his own life on the night of Tuesday, June 25, by jumping from the balcony of his Lekki, Lagos apartment.

Prior to his fatal act, Imudia made a series of distressing phone calls. He contacted his brother in the United States, providing instructions on how to distribute his wealth in the event of his death. He also reached out to his young daughter from a previous relationship, assuring her that he would always be with her in spirit, urging her to look to the sky to feel his presence.

The news has left his friends, family, and associates in a state of shock and confusion, as there were no clear indications of why Imudia would take such a drastic step. Originally from the Ika South local government area of Delta State, Imudia had a turbulent personal life. He was previously married to the mother of his young daughter, but the marriage ended due to irreconcilable differences.

Imudia later found love again and married a Caucasian woman, leading many to believe that he had found personal happiness. His sudden death, therefore, has been particularly bewildering to those who knew him.

Imudia had a distinguished career in the tech and business sectors. Before his tenure at Konga, he held significant positions, including Regional Director at TCL/Alcatel and General Manager/Managing Director for West and Central Africa at Microsoft Device and Services.

The e-commerce and tech communities in Nigeria have expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of a visionary leader. Imudia was known for his contributions to the growth of e-commerce in Nigeria and his innovative approach in the energy sector with D.light.

As the investigation into his death continues, the business world mourns the loss of a prominent figure whose work impacted many lives. Nick Imudia’s passing is a stark reminder of the mental health challenges that can affect individuals regardless of their professional success or personal circumstances.

Band A: Federal High Court Stops Ikeja Electric from Implementing New Tariffs

The Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an injunction against Ikeja Electric PLC and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), preventing them from applying or enforcing the new tariff increases stipulated in the April 2024 Supplementary Order on Tariff Increase for ‘Band A’ Feeders.

In a ruling on Tuesday, the court, presided over by Justice Chukwujeku Aneke, held that the tariffs published by Ikeja Electric on April 4, 2024, and the supplementary order on May 6, 2024, targeting ‘Band A’ Feeders, should not be implemented. This ruling came after Rida National Plastics Limited, represented by their lawyer Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) along with F. Giwa Esq and I. Aderibigbe Esq, filed an ex parte application.

Justice Aneke granted the interim injunction, stating that it will remain in place until Ikeja Electric and NERC comply fully with Section 51 of the Electricity Act, 2023, and until the court hears and determines the Motion on Notice for an Interlocutory Injunction.

Rida National Plastics, the plaintiff/applicant, filed the suit marked FHC/L/CS/1051/2024, with Ikeja Electric PLC and NERC named as the first and second defendants/respondents, respectively.

The court also temporarily restrained the defendants from demanding the payment of N20 million from the plaintiff. This sum represents the balance on the electricity bill dated May 4, 2024, which was calculated based on the disputed April 2024 and May 2024 Supplementary Orders on Tariff Increase for ‘Band A’ Feeders.

Additionally, the interim injunction prohibits Ikeja Electric and NERC from threatening to disconnect or actually disconnecting Rida National Plastics’ electricity supply due to non-compliance with the disputed tariffs.

Justice Aneke has adjourned the case until July 9, 2024, for the hearing of the motion on notice filed alongside the ex parte application. This legal action underscores the ongoing disputes and challenges within Nigeria’s electricity sector, particularly regarding tariff adjustments and their impact on consumers and businesses.
